Fiber Optic Blank Out Signs
  • 1.0 General Description
  • 1.1 Each side of a one-way or two-way sign shall be capable of displaying multiple messages.
  • 1.2 All standard FHWA / MUTCD legends available in single or multi-message overlay.
  • 1.3 Custom legends for special applications available.
  • 2.0 Functional Requirements
  • 2.1 All messages shall be clearly legible attracting attention under any lighting conditions.
  • 2.2 The sign shall completely blank out when not energized. No phantom words or legend shall be seen under any ambient light condition.
  • 2.3 Glass fiber bundles display messages.
  • 2.4 In most applications, bundles shall be arranged so in the event of one light source failure, the other shall continue to provide a discernable message (fail safe).
  • 2.5 A matte/clear lens mounted in the doorframe shall protect the entire sign face from UV light.
  • 2.6 50-watt halogen lamps shall be used for illumination.
  • 2.7 Transformers shall be used to reduce the incoming 120 volts to 10.8 watts.
  • 2.8 The sign shall be capable of continuous operation over a range in temperatures from -35 degrees to +140 degrees Fahrenheit (-37 degrees to +60 degrees Celsius).
  • 3.0 Mechanical Construction
  • 3.1 Housing shall be constructed of extruded aluminum.
  • 3.2 All components shall be readily accessible when either door(s) are open.
  • 3.3 All corners or seams are heli-arc welded to provide a weatherproof seal around the entire case.
  • 3.4 A continuous stainless steel hinge shall attach the housing and doors.
  • 3.5 Doors shall be constructed of extruded aluminum and have one side removable to gain access to the sign face.
  • 3.6 Sign face shall be constructed of aluminum and shall have the fiber optic assembly mounted to it.
  • 3.7 Sign shall have one or more stainless steel link locks to tightly secure the door to the gasket.
  • 3.8 A visor shall be provided to protect the sign face from direct sunlight.
  • 3.9 Drainage shall be provided by drain holes located on the housing bottom.
  • 4.0 Fiber Optic Modules
  • 4.1 The fiber optic modules and associated components shall be assembled directly to the sign face and shall have a back cover to provide protection to the module. The display shall consist of fiber optic glass bundles arranged to define the required message. The fiber optic glass bundles shall be ground smooth and optically polished at the input and output ends for maximum light transmission.
  • 4.2 The fiber optic glass bundles shall be mounted through the sign face from the inside. The numbers of bundles vary according to the message.
  • 4.3 Message color is provided by a tempered, optically corrected glass color filter in conformance with ITE specifications.
  • Warranty
    All products will be warranted to be free of defects due to material and workmanship for a period of two (2) years.
